Ashley McGraw DC brings exceptional expertise to public school system architecture. Before taking the role of Principal, Nick Williams led the Facility Planning and Design department for the District of Columbia Public Schools. In this role, he interfaced with school leaders, administrators and maintenance and operations teams on a daily basis to address the challenges that their facilities face. His work to develop Educational Specifications and material and specification standards that take into account how school buildings actually function. Here’s what we bring to each project from that experience:
1. True Understanding of a Stakeholder Perspective
We’ve been in the stakeholder’s shoes — we know the dynamics at play in the public school system. We’ve been the project owners and felt the pain of a too-small school with temporary accommodations. Our perspective is informed by the challenges project owners face, which helps us design with empathy and a true understanding of what public schools need.
2. Realities of Design Performance and Durability Over Time
As the head of the Facility Planning and Design department, Nick experienced the decay of systems and the upkeep required. Some things don’t translate from design on paper to the reality of public school wear and tear — we know this firsthand. We are able to combine our expertise in sustainable design with our knowledge of what’s truly realistic for a public school to design buildings that balance both priorities.
3. How Budgeting and Local Construction Affects Architecture
Having experience on both sides of the project gives us unparalleled insight into local construction processes and departmental budgeting. Since we have had an inside view into finances and how decisions are made, we can work with clients as a true partner, advising on how to make the most of your resources.
