Alice Deal Middle School’s projected enrollment exceeded their capacity. To solve this issue, and bring the building in line with District of
Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) educational specifications and ADA compliance. Ashley McGraw DC designed an addition that added 21,700 sq ft. This work includes a courtyard that connects the new and original spaces, a new cafeteria, twelve additional classrooms, two science labs, and educational support areas.
In addition, our design team tracked an energy use intensity (EUI) of 23.6 for thee addition, which is typically a value associated with Net Zero Energy school building. We achieved this through high performance design in the building envelope, glazing, heating and cooling, and lighting.
